We all hate when our computers get's infected with viruses..

I use Nortons Pro everyday
I also use AVG everyday and run the resident shield while im online
I use adaware and spybot search and destroy everyday before i conect the net up

Both nortons and AVG are itergrated into my pop3 client so the email virus are caught before i open them :)

while browsing so many websites whiledoing my PTR emails my AVG often finds trogens and such where my nortons wont find them. One example is trogen.dropper this one pops up so many times when browsing and goes into the temp internet files but AVG grabs it.

Sinse running all 4 everydady I am not getting infected but they find at least 1 or 2 a day in one form or the other.

On the odd ocasion if ones does get thru but my software says its found it afterwards I double check it was destroyed by:
1. Turning off system restore
2. Booting pc in safe mode
3. running nortons again
4. reboot and run AVG again
5. runing regedit to make sure all reg keys are gone..if not then manually remove them
6. turn system restore back on
7. have a beer, a smoke, relax and get back to woking online LOL

I all so run Norton Pro. I have my setting set so that nothing goes in or out without my approval, it is a hassle sometimes but it sure beats getting the computer infected. Running updates to your antivirus programs is very necessary these days.

I voted very seldom.

I almost never receive a virus.
I use Norton internet securetie.
With anti virus and firewall.

I must say I deleted every day the cookies.
I do every day the NAV scan and the panda scan.
And ofcourse every day ad-aware scan.
That's about it.

But in januari 2003 I had a mayor virus and hacker in my pc.
Everything must be deleted and everything including windows Xp is setup
new on my comp.
No that was not a funny time.
Everything with a password was deleted and the hacker had setup new passwords for everything.
Luckely after a few weeks everything went the good way.
And now I have very seldom a virus on my comp.

I get hit by a virus to my ptr email address... I can only guess a hacker lifted the addresses off the system.

Don't worry though - I'm collecting the evidence for the FEDS so this really "smart" guy or gal can spend a VERY LONG TIME WITH RAPISTS, MURDERERS AND JUNKIES!

Andrew...
Is it the very same virus everyday?

also is it a virus and not an adware or spyware?

I recieve emails with viruses on average everyday, but I seldom become infected. If I do become infected, I assume it's from my clicking with GPT links.

Since I now have quite a few email addresses that I use often, I can't help but recieve them. Most of my addresses are on websites (that's why I created them, for web related topics), so those spam bots get access to them. I can't tell other people what to do, but as far as the sites I go that list my email addresses, I can add those scripts to block those bots. However, I have way too many pages, so I haven't gotten around to it yet, As for my main email address, I've had it for years and I use it for just about everything, so I can't really do anything about it.

How to I prevent being infected? I really can't. When I do get a virus, I have no idea how exactly, lol. I NEVER download emails from people I don't know, and all of my mailboxes are protected somehow. I hardly download files from emails anyway... When I download programs off the web, I make sure the source is reliable and try to use a site that allows past downloaders to freely give their input on the download. Many times, people are more than willing to post about a virus being in the file. I try to scan as often as possible, but I have a ton of files on my computer so it takes time. When there's a big outbreak of a certain type, I'll check up on it ASAP (that's how I found out about the last one). I try to delete cookies as often as possible (I have a program that allows me to save the cookies I select, that way I don't have to log back in to everything).

Be careful when you recieve a virus and want to report the person. Remember what I meantioned about those bots (I doubt you read all of this long post, lol)? Some viruses are sent by using fake email addresses. When a person is infected, the virus searches certain files (address book related files, text documents, etc) on their computer and collects any email addresses. Then, it uses a method (I don't want to describe everything, this post is long enough already) to make it appear as if one of the collected email addresses sent it out. So, if you notice a message in your box saying you sent an email with a virus and you know it's not true, then either you or someone else is infected. I believe the only way you can be sure is by checking the headers.

Hi!
Until now, I didn't had so much probs with classical virus, but with adware and spyware. They are really annoying... And you catch up them daily by doing PTR. Several online scans gave different results how much of them I have, now I use SPY SWEEPER from Webroot, NORTON INTERNET SECURUTY don't catches them at all!
I have now the trial of SPY SWEEPER, but I think I'll buy it after trial period, it seems to be good! (-good-) At least, it deleted 105 nasties til now, which were not found by NORTON...

NORTON is really ok against virusses but not against all the other junk, I think.

Much Greetings!

Yes your are very correct in this!

That is the thing when dealing with these naties, to understand how the diferent programes work we must understand that a virus is totally diferent to adware and spyware.
Anti-virus programes do not scan for or find adware and spyware as they are not virus and therefore not in the definitions.
A virus duplicates itself and can be passed on to another computer.
Adware or spyware stays in your computer only and can not be passed on.

Therefore to just run an anti-virus programe alone will not find everything.

Also when it comes to adware and spyware, some programes scan and find, then help to rid your computer of them only once you have already got it in your system("adaware" and "spybot search and destroy" are 2 such programes). So they basically Cure the computer after its infected.
Other programes such as "spyware guard" and "spyware blaster" are Preventitive programes, meaning that they run in the background and stop the adware/spyware from actually getting in your system to begin with.

Using a combination of the diferent types of programes is the safest way to keep as secure as posible, oh and of course a good firewall :)
