XP out of the box has a number of security vulnerabilities which leave you open when you connect to the internet - notably an automatic shutdown after 60 seconds of being on line (and you'll usually find you've been gifted a virus or key looger upon reboot)

First of all, ensure you have a firewall working and block incoming and outgoing traffic for the following ports on both TCP and UDP protocols: 135, 137, 138, 139, 445, 593.

Install the Microsoft Security patches - ALL of them...

If however its to late and you are already afflicted and your pc keeps shutting down constanly do this to fix it:

go to :start" then "run"
type in "cmd" and click ok
In the screen that comes up type "shutdown -i" and hit enter
In the remote shutdown dilogue box that then apears change 20 or 60 second option to 9999 and close

this will give you aprox 3 hrs if I remember corectly before your system will remotely shutdown so you have time to run your virus scanner and remove the culprit.
After the system is clean again you can change the settings back if you desire.
