If you want to do PPC advertising you should start small.
It's often recommended to use free advertising methods until you
know how to sell.

I am starting out with free advertising and I have talked to many others who have done the same, and with success. I think that once you start getting some visitors to your website and making sales, then you might want to look into some paid options to increase traffic and sales. Starting out free, then going small and building your way up to a bigger ad compaign (if it becomes necessary), is the way to go I think. Some websites do very well without paying for much advertising and marketing at all.

I have submitted my URL to search engines and directories. I also was sure to get my link on some pages that have a good PR and that my website is Search Engine Friendly. I am not listed with most major search engines and I think that helps a good deal.

You can have your URL and other information in your signature on forums where it is allowed. Also post in the forums that allow you to put up one post about your business. Keep an eye on Employment and other Job offers/Requests sections of webmaster, web hosting or other forums that relate to your business. You can find a good deal or work that way and point people to your website.

Are traffic exchanges worth the effort?

Just joined http://www.trafficpods.com/index.jsp?ref=LottomagicZ4941A hopefully it is not a waist of time.

Anyone else here given them a try?

I have not had much luck with traffic exchanges. However, that was quite some time ago before I really knew much of anything. I haven't tried any since. I have heard for some that work pretty well if you do your research and join a good program.
