When picking keywords for your site, you can check overture for
a "simulation" of what people search for.

http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/

You then check google.com for the number of results for that keyword.

Example:
You make a site about hosting.
Search for hosting on overture.

Keyword: domain hosting
Number of searches: 3647707

Keyword: hosting
Number of searches: 1298287

Google number of results for domain hosting:
7 180 000

Google number of results for hosting:
62 500 000

This is just a brief example. You can easily see that domain hosting is much better keyword to go for than hosting.. but I didn't compare all the keywords and results.
Also you might not want to go for the biggest keywords with most competitors.

The bottom line here is that you have to look into carefully your site's keywords. If your keywords are common, you expect that your site will have to compete with the rest of sites with similar keywords. Thus, if your site is new it is highly improbable that it will achieve a good search engine ranking.

I prefer to optimise my site with few uncompetitive keywords. For an example, instead of using "work at home" keyword, I will choose to use "top work at home", "best work at home", "work at home business"....., My site rank quite well for the above keywords.

Normally I will use the google search results to determine how competitive are for the keywords, as for overture, I use it to research for the maximum top bid of the keywords.

That sounds like a good idea using some uncompetitive keywords. You have to consider of course, what words those looking for sites like yours (or mine) are going to key into a Search Engine.

I just visited the Keyworld Selector tool and keyed in the phrase that I feel is most related to my website. For that key phrase there have been so many hits that I don't think my website could compte very well. But oddly enough a lot of people that visit my website and come from Google.
