Following Up

I want to get everyone's input on this. It is about something I read in a business magazine the other day.

The article mentioned that many businesses do not followup and contact potential clients enough. It had some statistic saying that a large majority of people do not buy a product or service until the fifth time they are contacted. What does everyone think of this? It seems like a bit much to me.

Did they mention anything about what product or services and what the sales method is?
With e-mail marketing I have heard that you will need to contact your prospects 5 times before they buy, of course depending on your writings, and of course a big percentage will never be convinced.
