Memory Low

My comptuer has been acting up the past two days. It keeps saying memory low and shutting down program. But I'm not even using 1/4 of my memory. ANy ideas?

What OS do you use? Run your latest anti virus application. If you don't have one , download AVG here http://www.grisoft.com .

Definately do as spider said and run ur antivirus programe...make sure its a good one!! I recomend AVG or avast..if u want the direct URL to the free version of AVG post here.
dont use nortons :)

then run your anti adware and spyware programes ....often this stuff clogs up the pc badly and makes it sluggish
get adaware SE for this for a clean up option...post here if u dont have it and need the link.

Once you are certain the puter is free of all bad things ...and.........if it is still runing slow...then do the following:

1. check what you have in start up...often when u install programes they write to the registry and do hidden appliations upon start up...this slows down things and uses memory...clear the ones that are not esential
2. defrag your drive...this can help re alloct space and use it more affectivly thus enhancing performance
